Who You Gonna Call?

Where do you put your confidence? Is it in the things you have? Maybe it's in your friends or family. Those are all things that make sense for the most part right? Maybe you're wondering what I mean by that first sentence. What I mean is this: When things start to get rocky for you-with school, at home, in relationships with the people around you-who or what do you turn to?

Do we turn to maybe money when things are getting rough? There is a mindset that says if we just have enough money we will be okay regardless of what is happening to us. Maybe it's our friends that we turn to. Again there is the line of thought that if we will just surround ourselves with enough people things will be fine. For all of us there is something that we choose to latch onto for comfort in times of trouble, something that makes us feel like things will be ok.

I just finished reading Jeremiah 11:1-17. God is talking to Jeremiah about this very thing. Only, he is talking about how the Israelites have decided to turn to their false gods when things are rough. In verses 9-12 he really lets loose on the subject. He threatens to turn a deaf ear to the cries of the Israelites and let disaster fall on them. If they want to put their trust in their idols and false gods he says, then go ahead and see where it gets you. Seems pretty harsh.

The thing is though, God is not leaving them to fend for themselves. Rather I believe he is using this as a teaching moment for his children. It is like when a parent or a coach or teacher and that person is willing to let you do something on your own, even if they know you will fail. They know that eventually you will figure out that you need the one who actually knows how to handle the situation and will come to them to get that help. The same is true with God. We must learn, sometimes in very hard ways, that none of our false gods and idols have the power help us deal with the calamity of our lives. And He waits patiently for us to come to him knowing that only he can really give us the wisdom and help we need and desire in those situations. He is ready. Peace and Love y'all.
