So today I was going thorough some of my emails and I encountered this and wanted to share it as at least a part of today's devotional.
So David was known as a man after God's own heart. Think about that for a moment: Moses got to talk to God "as a man talks to a friend." Jacob wrestled with the angel and received the promise and blessing of God. But David was a man after God's own heart. That is incredible to me to think about.
Part of the reason that it is such a big deal is the fact that we know David had plenty of moments where he screwed up, and not just a little bit. Brother committed adultery, then tried to get the husband to sleep with his wife so he would think the forthcoming baby was his, and when that didn't work, he had the dude killed. He took a census of the people of the kingdom, mainly so he would know how big his army could be. His family was a mess with things like incest and murder and plots to take over the throne. Finally he had so much blood on his hands (figuratively that is) that God didn't allow him to build his temple which was one of the big honors that David had really hoped for.
Yet despite all of this, God refers to David as a man after his own heart. That gives me hope that no matter how bad I think or feel that I have messed up God still loves me and wants to make me his own and to make me a man after his own as well. The same is true for all of us. God loves each of so much that he wants to make us all men and women after his own heart, no matter how bad off we think we may be. Peace and Love y'all
