Here Today...Gone Tomorrow

So today I read Job 1. Job was a man of great wealth and influence. He had everything that he needed. Not only that, he was devoted to God and stayed away from evil. He even offered his own sacrifices for his children in case they sinned against God. He was a man that was on top of the world so to speak.

Then one day it was all taken away. Everything that he had, his wealth, his family all of it in one fair swoop it was gone. He must have felt like one of those rocks you see in the ocean, near the beach that just gets pounded over and over by the waves. According to the passage, one messenger after another brought him news of his misfortune. One wouldn't even be finished telling what had happened and another would show up with more bad news. And yet the last three verses record Job's response to all of this. He got up, tore his robe in grief, shaved his head and threw himself on the ground before the Lord. Then he did something unusual: He worshiped. In many cases like this it seems that our most natural response would be to begin questioning and blaming God. Yet Job worshiped. The last verse of the chapter says that in all of this Job did not sin; not once did he blame God.

That is amazing to me. We live in a day and age where we blame everyone and everything for our misfortune. And for many of us our misfortune is far less than that of Job. I think that it is good for us to look to Job as an example of how to handle adversity. He continued to seek God even when he didn't or couldn't understand what was behind-the-scenes. Yes later in the book he begins to question God about things going so wrong for him so suddenly, but still he remains faithful. When we can do the same, then we will be truly blessed. Peace and Love y'all.
