The "King"

So last night on ESPN LeBron "King" James made his big announcement about where he will be playing next season. The big "winner" is the Miami Heat, who now have the Terrific Trio of LeBron, D-Wade and Chris Bosh. Already they must be getting the rings sized for the multiple championships these three guys are going to win. At least that is the hope.

The thing that really has stood out to me the most in the circus that has been the free agency of LeBron James is the way that it has been treated as the biggest thing to happen in the world. Not just the world of sports mind you, but the WORLD period. LeBron and his crew have done a great deal to make sure that everyone knows he is a free agent even to the point that he had his own, hour long, ESPN special to announce where he would sign. It all screams EGO!! and ADORE ME!! Through it all, it seems that LeBron has been very focused...on LeBron.

I read an article today by Mitch Albom that I thought was really very good. In it he made the point that there have been men lining up to court LeBron, to basically throw $100 million at him. Albom talked about the atrocity of this when we have people struggling to live, struggling to eat, struggling simply to get by, and we make such a big huge deal out of one man deciding where he will play a game for the next handful of years. To be honest I lost interest long ago.

But it all brings up a very good lesson for us as followers of Christ. See Jesus didn't have one hour specials to announce to everyone where he was going to be the next time he taught. He create a fuss about what or where his next miracle would be. He didn't proclaim himself. Paul noticed this quality and thought it was an important thing to mention to Christ followers. Paul knew that all too often we can be ruled by our egos and our desire to be noticed. He also knew that Jesus was not this way and that He should be our model.

In the end, LeBron is simply a man. He is going to be selfish and self-focused due to the fact that we are all flawed human beings. We will do the same things, but not on as big a scale, but we will do them none the less because we are ultimately flawed. But as Christ followers we strive to live as He did, to put aside our egos and selfish desires and to simply try to live as Jesus lived.

Peace, Grace and Love y'all.
